Just like physicians who are licensed and trained in providing injections, dentists are health care practitioners who deliver professional health and wellness services to patients. Dr. Matonti is an active member of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics (AAFE) and is certified to offer Botox to patients as a stand-alone service or as a compliment to cosmetic dentistry. She is dedicated to giving the best esthetic outcome to her patients.
Botox is well known for its ability to restore a youthful appearance in the skin. However, in dentistry, Botox can be used for the treatment of TMD, a painful disorder that affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in the jaw. The symptoms for TMD/TMJ are caused by repetitive clenching and grinding of the jaw and teeth; which is often due to underlying stress. Clenching and grinding will wear down your teeth and cause hypersensitivity, jaw aches and headaches. Botox helps eliminate these symptoms by decreasing the intensity of muscle contractions; which allows the muscles to still function, but to relax them just enough to prevent intense contractions and tooth damage.
Botox can also be used to treat "Gummy Smile". This occurs when the gums are overly prominent whenever one smiles. Botox can be injected into the upper and lower lips to reduce the appearance of a Gummy Smile. These injections volumizes the lips to help cover the gums; they can also help temporarily reduce fine lines above the lips.
Dermal fillers are used to rejuvenate the facial features, providing a youthful and healthy look by restoring volume to the skin. The extra volume can also be used to highlight special facial features or correct volume deficiencies in oral related areas. They provide an appearance of fullness at the injection site and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. Typically, dermal fillers are used for marionette lines, corners of the mouth, lip augmentation and deeper folds. Treatments can last 9 to 12 months.
Overall, a great smile involves the teeth and all the surrounding soft tissue areas, which can be smoothed by Botox and volumized by Dermal Fillers. Dr. Matonti has received special training on the use and administration of Botox and Dermal Fillers through the AAFE.
